Feminism in the Indian context – #AwakenDurgaWithin #Review by Shantala

When I first read the blurb of this book, I was immediately intrigued, because it seemed to take a unique approach to addressing women’s issues (especially in India), by using tales from Indian mythology/historical fiction to provide practical solutions for modern women who want to assert themselves and reclaim their life in a largely patriarchal society.

But to be completely honest, while I thought the concept was great, I was unsure if it will actually work. Though after having read this book, I have to say that for the most part, the book delivers on what it promises. And strikes a good balance between the two diverse genres of mythology & self help, and does so in a seemingly effortless fashion.

That being said, while I agreed with most everything written in this book, I personally have worked through all of this long back, and so in that sense it did not deliver any new insights to me personally. But that’s just me.

I am sure this book will prove very useful to many women who are thinking of or are even beginning to assert themselves at home or at work. And for them, it might serve as a great starting point, as this book will encourage them to take those initial baby steps towards their eventual goal.
